On a headland north of Tuy Hòa, the coast suddenly turns geometric: thousands of dark stone columns, five- and six-sided, packed together like a giant's honeycomb sliding into a turquoise sea. Ghềnh Đá Đĩa — 'the reef of stone plates' — is Việt Nam's answer to the Giant's Causeway, with a fraction of the crowd.

The columns are columnar basalt — the signature of ancient volcanic activity. Millions of years ago, lava flowing into the sea here cooled fast and contracted, cracking into the same hexagonal joints you see in Ireland's Causeway or Iceland's south coast. The sea then spent geological ages polishing the fracture faces into the stacked-plate look that gave the reef its name. Local fishing families will tell you the plates were set by giants laying a banquet table for the sea — a better story than thermodynamics, and told with conviction.

The reef sits in An Ninh Đông, Tuy An — about 35km north of Tuy Hòa, the region's transport hub (airport and mainline trains). It's a comfortable half-day by motorbike or car on coastal roads; the final kilometres wind through rice fields and drying racks of fish. There's a small entrance fee and a short paved walk down to the columns. Combine it with Ô Loan lagoon just south — the oyster lunch is the region's other signature.

You walk on the formation itself — the column tops make natural stepping stones, tide pools hide crabs and urchins between them, and the sound is half sea, half hollow stone. Give it more than the ten minutes a tour bus allows: the reef reads differently from the cliff above, from the waterline, and from the tiny fishing harbour tucked into the next cove. Wear grippy shoes; the lower plates are wet and alive.

January to August is the dry, blue-water window; September to December brings the central coast's storm season and the reef loses its colours to grey chop. Come at sunrise if you can — the low light rakes across the column tops and the tour groups are still at breakfast. Golden hour before sunset is the photographers' second chance.
