Tuyên Quang now stretches from its own gentle highlands to the legendary Hà Giang loop — stone plateaus and mountain passes that touch the sky, home to Dao and H'Mong families farming the terraced slopes. The merger in 2025 unified what many travellers know as the backpacker's grand loop: Đồng Văn karst plateau, Mã Pí Lèng pass (one of the most dramatic roads in Asia), Mèo Vạc, and the Lũng Cú flag tower at the province's top.
Most travellers come for the loop — a 3–4 day motorcycle circuit with hairpin turns, panoramic passes and homestays in stone villages. But there's also Na Hang lake on the older Tuyên Quang side, tucked in a remote valley, and the quieter roads that connect them reward those who linger longer.

How long should I spend on the Hà Giang loop?
3–4 days minimum to do it justice — rushing won't capture the passes and village life. Five days leaves room for Na Hang or a slower pace.
Do I need my own motorcycle or can I book a tour?
Both work — guided tours are safe and offer local insights; self-riding requires experience with mountain roads and mountain bike skills.
What's the best season?
September to November: dry, cool and clear skies. March–May is spring bloom with mild weather. Avoid July–August (rain, humidity).
What about altitude sickness on the loop?
The highest pass (Mã Pí Lèng) is ~1,500m — rarely a problem for most travellers, but stay hydrated and acclimatize gently.
Is it safe to ride the pass in rain?
Mã Pí Lèng is spectacular but dangerous when wet — hairpins and no barriers. Many travellers wait for dry conditions or book a guided ride with experienced drivers.
