District 1 holds most of the city's stays, and it splits in two. Around Đồng Khởi is the upscale, business core — colonial-era hotels, fine dining, steps from Bến Thành Market. Phạm Ngũ Lão and Bùi Viện are the backpacker streets: cheap, loud, social. First-timers who want to walk everywhere stay in District 1; Thảo Điền across the river is calmer but needs a ride in.
