The walled city of the Nguyễn dynasty, raised in the first years of the nineteenth century under Emperor Gia Long — ramparts and a moat running for kilometres, enclosing the Imperial City and old residential quarters. Walking the flag tower, gates and walls gives the scale; the Imperial City inside is ticketed separately.
