Hà Giang Loop

Limestone passes & ethnic villages by motorbike

Curated by Trip2VN4 daysPrivateFrom ~$220

Four days on what many riders call the most beautiful road in Vietnam. The loop climbs out of Hà Giang city into a landscape of stacked limestone, corn planted in pockets of rock, and villages where the week still turns around market day. Ride pillion behind a local easy-rider or take a car with a driver — the road is the point either way.

Trip highlights

  • Ride the Hà Giang Loop with local easy-riders or a private car.
  • Explore the Đồng Văn Karst Plateau Geopark and Heaven's Gate.
  • Experience the Mã Pí Lèng Pass and a boat trip on the Nho Quế River.
  • Stay in quiet guesthouses and homestays in ethnic villages.

Why we chose this trip

Our riders live on this loop year-round — the route, the homestays and the safety calls are theirs, not a reseller's.

How we assess

Day by day

  1. Day 1

Hà Giang to Yên Minh, over Heaven's Gate

Out of the city and straight into the climb. The Quản Bạ pass — Heaven's Gate — is the first time the valley floor drops away, and the road stays high from here. Lunch in a village, then an afternoon of switchbacks into Yên Minh, where the night is quiet and the sky is full of stars.

  2. Day 2

Into the Đồng Văn karst plateau

The strangest landscape in the country: a UNESCO global geopark where grey stone breaks through every field. Stops are unhurried — a Hmong king's old house, a roadside market if the day is right — and the evening ends in Đồng Văn's old quarter over hotpot.

  3. Day 3

Mã Pí Lèng pass and the Nho Quế river

The day the whole loop builds toward. Mã Pí Lèng hangs above a gorge with the Nho Quế river a green thread far below; a short boat run on the water shows you the same wall from underneath. Overnight in Mèo Vạc.

  4. Day 4

    The quiet road back

Return by the southern route — emptier, greener, with long stretches where yours is the only engine. Back in Hà Giang city by late afternoon, in time for the night bus or an onward transfer we arrange.

Good to know

These are real mountain roads: long riding days, sheer drops, weather that changes by the hour. October to April brings the clearest skies. You don't need to ride yourself — most guests sit pillion — but you do need to be comfortable being on a bike for several hours a day.
