River gardens & floating markets

Mekong

The Mekong is a world of water — floating markets at first light, fruit orchards, and the slow rhythm of life along the river.

In the delta the roads are really rivers: boats outnumber cars, houses face the canal instead of the street, and the day's trading is done from a hull before breakfast. Cần Thơ makes the natural base for a first visit.

This is where the river finally meets the sea, leaving behind the richest soil — and the gentlest pace — in the country.

What you'll eat

Delta cooking is generous the way the land is: sour canh chua bright with tamarind, caramelised cá kho tộ in a clay pot, and orchard fruit eaten in the shade it fell from.
