Hoa Lo Prison Relic

What remains of the prison the French colonial administration began building in Hà Nội in 1896, later used to hold captured American pilots during the war and nicknamed the Hanoi Hilton. Most of the site was cleared in the 1990s; the surviving gatehouse and cell blocks are now a museum, and an hour covers it.

Temple Of Literature

Vietnam's Temple of Literature, founded in 1070 and home to the country's first national academy from 1076. Eighty-two stone stelae, each carried on a turtle and listing the doctoral graduates of an examination between 1442 and 1780, are held in UNESCO's Memory of the World register. The walk through its five courtyards takes about an hour.

Tran Quoc Pagoda

Hanoi's oldest pagoda, with origins traced to the sixth century and moved to this West Lake islet in 1615. The red multi-tiered stupa by the water is one of the city's most photographed silhouettes, especially at sunset. Dress modestly; it remains a working temple.
