The Bắc Hà Horse Racing Festival in early June is the district's most significant annual event. Local farmers ride working pack horses without saddles or stirrups around the town stadium track. The competition lasts two days, typically drawing thousands of spectators from surrounding valleys. Because race dates depend on local district announcements each spring, travelers should check dates two months in advance. Accommodations in town center book out weeks ahead for this specific weekend.

The Bắc Hà market gathers every Sunday morning from 06:00 to 14:00 in the center of town. It operates year-round and serves as the primary trade center for Flower Hmong, Tày, and Nùng villagers. The livestock section sells water buffalo and horses on the riverbank edge. Food stalls serve thắng cố, a traditional horse meat stew, alongside fresh corn wine. Arrive before 08:30 to see trading before tour buses arrive from Sa Pa.

Spring brings the Gầu Tào festival during the first lunar month, usually falling in late January or February. Hmong communities hold this ritual on open hillsides to pray for health and harvest prosperity. Traditional pan-pipe playing, stick pushing, and crossbow shooting accompany the ceremonies. White plum blossoms also bloom across Tả Van Chư and Bản Phố communes during this period, followed by the Tam Hoa plum harvest festival in late May.

Bắc Hà sits 65 kilometers northeast of Lào Cai railway station. Travelers can take a train or sleeper bus from Hà Nội to Lào Cai, then connect by local bus or private taxi.
