Places to Visit Near Cao Bằng and Bản Giốc Falls: Practical Detours

Ngườm Ngao Cave sits just four kilometers from Bản Giốc Waterfall along provincial road DT206 in Trùng Khánh district. Pairing these two locations in a single morning or afternoon requires minimal transit time. The cave extends several kilometers through limestone karst, with a standard paved walking route taking about one hour. A small entrance ticket is purchased at the gate. Motorbike taxis and local transport run frequently between the waterfall parking area and the cave entrance. Visiting earlier in the morning helps you avoid mid-day tour bus crowds.

Thang Hen Lake and Núi Thủng (Angel Eye Mountain) sit in Quảng Hòa district, roughly midway between Bản Giốc and Cao Bằng city. The detour off Highway QL3 takes 20 to 30 minutes on paved provincial roads. Núi Thủng features a large natural hole piercing a limestone karst peak, surrounded by a broad grassy valley. During the dry season, the valley floor becomes a wide meadow suitable for walking. In the rainy season, rising water turns parts of the valley into interconnected lakes. Allow two to three hours to explore this valley before continuing your journey.

Phúc Sen village lies directly along Highway QL3, roughly 30 kilometers east of Cao Bằng city. Travelers passing between the provincial capital and Bản Giốc do not need an off-road detour to visit. The Nùng An ethnic community here has practiced traditional iron forging for generations. Workshops sit right beside the roadside, where you can watch smiths work heated steel by hand. Local stalls sell carbon steel kitchen knives and farming tools. A brief 30-minute stop provides a clear look at local upland craft traditions.

Pác Bó historical site is located 50 kilometers north of Cao Bằng city in Hà Quảng district, in the opposite direction from Bản Giốc. The drive takes around one hour each way along provincial road DT203. The site includes Lenin Stream (Suối Lê Nin) with clear turquoise water and walking paths shaded by bamboo groves. Because Pác Bó lies northwest of the city while Bản Giốc is to the east, travelers should allocate a separate half-day to visit Pác Bó comfortably without rushing.
