The citadel before the heat
Through the Ngọ Môn gate early, while the courtyards are still quiet — throne hall, royal reading pavilion, long walls of glazed tile. A guide who knows the court stories makes the empty spaces make sense.

A proper Huế lunch
Bún bò done the way this city insists on, plus the little rice cakes — bánh bèo, bánh nậm — that were once palace food and are now everyone's.
Afternoon
Royal tombs, then the river home
Two tombs, chosen for contrast: Tự Đức's pine-shaded lake garden, built as a retreat while its owner still lived, and Khải Định's fever-dream of mosaic on a hillside. Then a dragon boat down the Perfume River to Thiên Mụ pagoda as the light softens.

Huế is Vietnam's rain capital from October to December — atmospheric, but bring cover. The citadel involves a few kilometres of easy walking; mornings are far kinder than mid-afternoon in summer.
