Phong Nha Caves

A day underground in the oldest karst on earth

1 daySmall groupFrom ~$70

Phong Nha–Kẻ Bàng holds some of the oldest karst in Asia and the biggest caves ever surveyed. The famous giants take days and long waitlists; this day tour is their accessible cousin — two world-class caves, one entered by river, one on foot, both genuinely astonishing.

Trip highlights

  • Explore Phong Nha cave by rowed boat, deep inside the mountain.
  • Walk on sandbanks within Phong Nha cave.
  • Discover Paradise Cave's vast chambers and massive formations on foot.
  • Experience two world-class caves in the oldest karst on earth.
  • An accessible day tour from Phong Nha town or Đồng Hới.

Why we chose this trip

Two world-class caves in one honest day — no waitlist, no expedition budget — with the river entrance done by rowed boat, as it should be.

How we assess

Day by day

  1. Morning

Phong Nha cave, entered by boat

A wooden boat runs up the Son river to the cave mouth, cuts its engine, and is rowed inside — a kilometre of river under the mountain, the ceiling rising and falling in the lamplight. You walk a stretch of it on sandbanks deep in the dark.

  2. Midday

    Lunch on the riverbank

Back into daylight for a countryside lunch near the water — the valley here is all limestone walls, peanut fields and church spires.

  3. Afternoon

    Paradise Cave on foot

A boardwalk descends into a chamber so large the far wall reads as landscape, then runs a full kilometre between formations the size of buildings. Back to town by late afternoon.

What's included

  • Guide and transfers from Phong Nha town or Đồng Hới
  • River boat into Phong Nha cave
  • Entrance fees to both caves
  • Lunch

Not included

  • Getting to Đồng Hới (train or flight)
  • Drinks
  • The expedition caves — those are separate multi-day trips we can talk about

Good to know

The caves hold a steady, pleasant temperature year round — the walking is easy and lit. In the October–November wet season the river can run too high for the boat route; itineraries swap to dry caves when that happens.
